Here is an experiment almost nobody runs, because almost nobody has a reason to. Take one person, at one point in time, and put them through every major resilience instrument in the field: the trait scales, the coping screens, the protective-factor inventories, the corporate self-assessments, and a full psychometric profile. Same person. Same weeks. Same struggles.

We had a reason. When Paul, my partner in life and business, hit the lowest stretch of his adult life, months of chronic pain from an undiagnosed rotator cuff tear, ruined sleep, cancelled clients, a nervous system stuck in fight mode, we were in the middle of building a resilience instrument of our own. So he took them all. Nine instruments, one fortnight, one honest answer set. What came back is the single most instructive dataset I know for anyone who uses resilience measurement professionally, because the nine results do not agree. They do not even rhyme.

The short version: the same person, in the same low fortnight, scored High on two instruments (ER-89, SPF), Normal on one (RSA), Moderate on one (CD-RISC), Medium on one (BRCS), Developing on one (NMRQ), on the low end on one (RS), Low on one (BRS), and 13% on the PRI. Not one of these results is a scoring error. That is the point.

Why nine valid instruments disagree

The instinctive reading is that most of these instruments must be wrong. The instinct is itself wrong, and seeing why is the most useful thing this page can teach. These instruments disagree because they were built to answer different questions, and each answered its own question more or less correctly.

The ER-89 asks who you usually are, and Paul’s trait resilience, decades of hard-won coping, genuinely was intact: High is a fair answer to that question. The SPF asks what protective factors you have built, and his were real: social support, skills, goal efficacy do not evaporate in four bad months. The RSA asks the same family of question domain by domain, and its spread already hints at the truth: Social Support at 48 of 56, Personal Structure at 16 of 35, a life still held by others while its own scaffolding sagged. The CD-RISC and BRCS ask how you perceive your coping, and a man determinedly holding it together perceives, and presents, middling coping: Moderate, Medium. The NMRQ asks how you rate your everyday resilience, and his honest self-rating had slipped below the first band line: Developing. The RS asks about enduring self-perception, and even that had begun to erode: 123, on the low end. And the BRS asks the bluntest question of all, are you bouncing back from stress, to which the honest answer was no: Low.

Read as a set, the disagreement stops looking like noise and starts looking like structure. The trait and protective-factor instruments (high scores) were measuring the foundations. The self-perception instruments (middling scores) were measuring the mask. The state instruments (low scores) were measuring the moment. All three layers were true at once, because a person is all three layers at once.

What only the pattern tells you

Now put yourself in the coach’s chair with exactly one of these results in hand. With the SPF’s High, you might conclude your client is fine. With the BRS’s Low, you know he is struggling, and nothing more. With the NMRQ’s Developing, you have an adjective. Each single number is defensible, and each single number, alone, would have pointed the work somewhere unhelpful: more strengths work for a man whose strengths were not the problem, or generic stress management for a man whose actual problem was a torn rotator cuff, destroyed sleep, and a stress physiology that no longer switched off.

The pattern is what tells you what to do, and this is the honest case for the PRI’s place in the set: it is the one instrument built to report the pattern directly. Paul’s 13% overall was not the useful part. The useful part was the shape underneath it: Health at 1% and Sleep at 4% (the collapsed foundation), Emotional Agility at 2% against Emotional Literacy at 64% (he could name every emotion; he could not move with any of them), and Creative Insight at 79%, the intact capacity the recovery was eventually built from. That shape is, in one profile, what the other eight instruments told us only when read together, plus the one thing none of them could say: where to start.

None of this makes the other instruments bad. It makes them partial, on purpose, each a sound answer to its own narrow question. How to use this page

FAQ

Why do different resilience tests give different results?

Because they measure different things, on purpose. Trait scales (like the ER-89) measure who you usually are; protective-factor inventories (like the SPF or RSA) measure what you have built; self-perception screens (like the CD-RISC or BRCS) measure how you rate your coping; state measures (like the BRS or PRI) measure how you are doing now. The same person can honestly score High, Moderate and Low in the same week, one result per layer. A disagreement between resilience tests is usually information, not error.

Can one person really score High and Low on resilience at the same time?

Yes, and this page documents exactly that: the same person, in the same fortnight, scored High on the ER-89 and SPF and Low on the BRS, with everything in between. His foundations were intact, his present state was collapsed, and each instrument reported the layer it was built to see. The mistake is not in the instruments; it is in treating any single number as the whole person.

Which resilience test should a coach actually use?

Match the instrument to the consequence. For a quick screen or a conversation starter, a short scale is fine and honest. For a development engagement, where a plan and re-measurement hang on the result, you need an instrument that reports the pattern, not a single number: normalised scores, domain and driver structure, and a debrief. Is the PRI just claiming to be better than all the others?

No, and this page is the proof of the more careful claim. Each instrument here answered its own question correctly, including on the hardest test we could devise: one person, nine instruments, same fortnight. The PRI’s difference is the question it asks, not superiority on the others’ questions. It asks: what is the pattern, and where do we start? If that is not your question, one of the other eight instruments may serve you perfectly well.
