The assumption that resilience is all in the mind

Ask most people where resilience comes from and they will point to the mind. Mindset, attitude, mental toughness, the will to push through. It is a natural assumption, and it is half right, which is what makes it misleading. The mental side is real. It is just not the foundation.

The foundation is physical. Resilience is built on a body that recovers well, and when the body is running down, no amount of mindset holds the line for long. This is the part a lot of coaching skips, because it looks like wellness rather than performance. It is not. It is the base the rest of resilience stands on, and it is what the Health domain measures.

What the Health domain is

The Health domain is one of the six domains in the Personal Resilience Indicator, and it holds a particular position: it is the foundational one. It is built from two drivers, Sleep and Lifestyle, the first covering restorative recovery, the second covering the daily patterns of movement and nutrition.

Together, these describe the physical base of resilience. The phrase I keep coming back to is that the body is the substrate through which the mind becomes resilient. You can work on composure, optimism, and connection all you like, but if the physical base is eroding, you are building on sand, and the higher-order work will not hold.

Why resilience is physical, not just psychological

This is not a wellness slogan. It reflects what the research actually shows about how resilience works.

Current neuroscience is clear that resilience is an active biological process, built through adaptations the nervous system makes in response to stress it can recover from, not simply a matter of attitude (Nestler & Russo, 2024). That biology runs on physical inputs. Sleep is when the stress system recalibrates and the brain does its maintenance; recent work frames sleep as part of how the brain actively recovers from stress (Yu et al., 2025). Movement reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression and supports the brain’s capacity to adapt (Banyard et al., 2025). And the pattern of what we eat is linked, in large recent reviews, to mental health outcomes through inflammation and the gut-brain connection (Lane et al., 2024). None of these is a lifestyle nicety sitting outside resilience. Each is a lever on the machinery resilience is made of.

Put simply: the mind you are trying to strengthen is running on a body, and the body’s condition sets the ceiling on what the mind can sustain.

How much the base actually matters

It is worth being concrete about the size of this, because it is larger than most people assume. A 2023 study in Nature Mental Health followed 287,282 people over nine years and found that a combined healthy-lifestyle pattern, spanning sleep, physical activity, diet and related behaviours, was associated with a substantially lower risk of depression (Zhao et al., 2023). The part worth pausing on is what happened when the researchers accounted for genetic risk, in a subset of 197,344 of those participants: the protective effect of a healthy lifestyle held even among people with high genetic susceptibility, and the analysis pointed to a causal relationship rather than a mere correlation.

That reframes the whole domain. The physical base is not a minor input a strong mind can override. It is a major, modifiable determinant of whether the system holds, and it matters regardless of the hand someone was dealt. For a coach, that is the difference between treating Health as a nice-to-have and treating it as one of the highest-leverage places to work.

The two drivers, and where to read more

The Health domain resolves into two drivers, each worth understanding in its own right.

Sleep is the recovery driver. It is not passive downtime but active neural maintenance, the process by which the stress system resets and the brain services itself. When it fails, emotional reactivity rises and clear thinking falls. This is covered in depth in the piece on Sleep and resilience.

Measuring these two separately, rather than rolling them into a single health figure, matters, because a person can be strong on one and thin on the other, and the work is different in each case.

Why the base comes first

There is a reason the Health domain sits where it does, and a practical rule that follows from it.

If the physical base is thin, it is often the place to start, whatever else the profile shows. Working hard on higher-order skills while sleep, movement, and nutrition are eroding is like coaching someone to run faster on a sprained ankle. The instruction is not wrong; the timing is. Shore up the base, and the rest of the work suddenly has something to stand on.

This is also why the Health domain is not a separate, lesser, physical corner of resilience, walled off from the psychological domains. It is the substrate they run on. Composure, cognition, and connection are all more available to a system that is physically recovered, and all harder to reach in one that is depleted. The body and the mind are not two systems here. They are one, and the Health domain is where that shows up most plainly.
