The work that happens before the solving
Watch someone handle a hard problem well and the impressive part usually happens before any solution appears. They slow down. They work out what the problem actually is before rushing to fix it. They hold the messy situation in mind long enough to see its shape, and they do not let every ping, worry, and tangent pull them off it. That unglamorous front end is what the Attention driver measures, and it is where a lot of problem-solving is quietly won or lost.
Most people jump to solving. They grab the first framing that presents itself and start pushing, which is why so much effort gets spent solving the wrong problem well. Attention is the discipline that comes first: defining the problem clearly, breaking it into parts, and then staying with it, holding focus against the constant pull of distraction. It is the focused, systematic mode of cognition, and unlike raw intelligence, it is a system you can strengthen.
What Attention measures
Attention, as a resilience driver, is your capacity to direct and sustain focus on a problem: to define it, work through it methodically, and screen out interference long enough to make headway.
Two kinds of interference matter here, and the driver covers both. There is external distraction, the noise, the interruptions, the urgency of the inbox. And there is internal distraction, the mental chatter, the worry, the mind wandering off to something else. Staying with a problem means managing both. This is not about grinding joylessly; it involves flexible, focused thinking, knowing when to stay the course and when to shift, but doing so deliberately rather than being yanked around by whatever is loudest. When it works, you can define a problem clearly and stay with it long enough to make progress, even when the solution is not immediately obvious.
Attention is a brain system, and it is trainable
Here is the part that changes how this is coached. Attention is not a fixed personality trait. It is a set of brain systems, and those systems can be strengthened.
Neuroscience describes attention not as one thing but as a set of networks in the brain that let you stay alert, orient to what matters, and keep focus under executive control (Petersen & Posner, 2012). Cognitive research treats the capacity to hold that focus and resist distraction as a measurable ability that varies from person to person, and that shows up in how often attention lapses and the mind slips off-task (Unsworth et al., 2021). The important part is that this ability is not fixed. A meta-analysis of 111 randomised controlled trials, covering more than nine thousand people, found that training attention through mindfulness practices produced small-to-moderate but reliable gains in exactly these capacities, including executive attention and sustained attention (Zainal & Newman, 2024). Work in high-demand, high-stress groups makes the same two points vividly: Amishi Jha’s studies of military and first-responder cohorts, for instance, show that attention is highly vulnerable to stress, which fragments focus and pulls the mind into wandering, and that it still responds to training even under punishing conditions (Jha, 2021). The crucial point for a coach is that a client whose focus scatters under pressure is not stuck with a bad brain. Attention behaves like a trainable capacity, which means it can be built.
This is why Attention sits inside the Cognition domain, paired with Creative Insight. Attention is the focused mode that defines a problem and holds it steady. Creative Insight is the sudden mode that supplies the non-obvious connection. Attention does the loading: you cannot have a useful insight about a problem you have not first defined and grappled with. The two are partners, and the focused work of Attention is what sets the other up.
Why this is a driver you can train
Attention earns its place among the trainable drivers precisely because the underlying systems respond to practice.
The capacity to notice when your focus has drifted and bring it back, to resist the pull of the more urgent but less important, and to stay with a problem past the point of initial frustration can all be developed. This is not about superhuman concentration; it is about reducing the leakage, the constant small surrenders of focus to distraction that add up to a scattered mind. For a coach, this is workable and concrete: a client who cannot stay with a problem is not doomed to that, and building the habit of noticing and returning focus moves the driver.
What this looks like in practice
For a coach, a low Attention result points to a specific pattern: a client who scatters, jumps to solutions, or cannot hold a hard problem long enough to make progress.
The work is not to demand more concentration by willpower. It is to build the front-end discipline: slowing down to define the problem before solving, noticing the pull of internal and external distraction, and practising the return of focus rather than expecting focus to hold itself. A client who moves from “I keep bouncing off this and never get traction” to “I can define what this actually is and stay with it” has changed the capacity that all their problem-solving depends on.
